“While sci fi fans don’t mind (and often excel at) criticizing their sci fi shows, they are generally only supportive of criticizing that focuses on “literary” details—plot holes, bad writing, continuity in the canon, inconsistent application of science. But as soon as you start talking about the bigger structures in a show’s texts, like racist logic, sexism, classism, whatever, some douchey white dudes with serious entitlement issues are going to dismiss you. (It’s actually sort of funny, because they can’t really, like the rest of the world of douchey white dudes, tell you you’re reading too much into the show, or taking the show too seriously, because ten minutes ago, they were posting about insignificant detail x in an episode that aired 20 years ago.) If I complain about the complete lack of plot in Avatar, for example, I’ll hear murmurs of consent in a room full of geeks. If I say Avatar is inexcusably racist, however, that same room will suddenly get defensive.” —Courtney Stoker, interviewed by Amanda Hess at The Sexist (via meloukhia) (via dorianisms) (via captaincadet) (via alliterate)

Tumblr Tuesday

Well, I didn’t know who I wanted to actually rec at first, but as I was playing catchup with my dashboard, the blog that stood out most was The Comic Kid. I was just looking through his blog a minute ago and the next thing I know I’m on page 10! And that to me is what constitutes a great blog. Follow him for all things queer, quirky, questionable in the comic book world.

And here are a few of my other favorites (even though I am so new):

  • comic-relief - For SOME reason I can’t figure out, this blog is number uno on my crushes. Oh I don’t know, maybe because their (and I said their because I’m not 100% sure on everyone’s gender here yet) posts are f#&king awesome. Follow. Also, I loved their 20 favorite artists posts!
  • ignitions - Again, another blog that’s high up on my crushes. Follow for amazing comic related posts.
  • fyeahdickgrayson - I’m a bit surprised I like this blog so much. It might be because I don’t know not the first thing about Dick Grayson except for the fact that he was the first Robin (I think) and that he was Nightwing.
  • onlymetahuman - Not much to say about this blog. Things are pretty self explanatory if you head on over. He always states his opinions on things and is one of the post polite people I’ve “met” since dipping my feet in this comic community.

People of Color in DC Comics

I just realized the reason why I was never fond of DC Comics when I was growing up. Especially not as much as I was in love with Marvel characters. It was because there weren’t any super heroes of color in the DC Universe. And when I say any, I mean the ones that were in the forefront; the ones that I knew about. It’s kinda disappointing to me now that I think about it because with Marvel, my favorites are of color: Storm, Patriot, Falcon and Sunfire. Marvel is much more diverse. They have people of all shapes, sizes, colors, and backgrounds where as DC I don’t get that. And it might be because I’m so new to things in the DC Universe but from what I’ve seen the only character of color is Green Lantern and Cyborg. And Green Lantern isn’t even black in every continuity. I just wish they would have more. That’s all I’d want.
